Mike Wilkins (1930–2025)
Somerset Rugby is saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Wilkins, a former Taunton RFC player and 1st XV Captain in 1958/59.
Mike’s rugby career spanned from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, during which he also represented Dorset & Wilts at the county level. He was a highly respected player, known for his leadership on and off the field. Pictured here at a former players’ reunion, Mike is also seen presenting a trophy to the Captain of SLR Lisieux RFC during the inaugural twinning rugby match between the two towns in 1958 — a testament to his enduring commitment to the game.
Off the pitch, Mike was a dedicated teacher and ended his career as Deputy Head at Heathfield School in Taunton. His influence helped shape many talented rugby players over the years, with numerous former pupils attributing their sporting success to his guidance and mentorship.
In 2006, Mike, along with six other former players, founded the Friends of Taunton Rugby, becoming one of the club’s original Trustees — a position he held for many years, helping to strengthen the club’s community and legacy.
More information will be shared in due course, but at this time, Somerset Rugby offers its deepest condolences to Mike’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him. His contribution to the game, his club, and his community will be fondly remembered.
