In Memory of former England International Gerry Redmond
SCRFU would like to express great sadness on hearing of the passing of Gerry Redmond.
We regret to inform you that former England international Gerry Redmond passed away on Sunday (June 1, 2025), aged 82. He made 41 appearances for Weston-super-Mare between 1961 and 1970 and represented Somerset in the County Championship.
Redmond was born and raised in Weston-super-Mare and attended Weston Boys’ Grammar School, where he played rugby under the guidance of ex-Wales international Willie Davies and developed into a specialist No.8.
He then went to St Luke’s College, Exeter, and then Cambridge University, where he gained three Rugby Blues, captaining them in his final year. Redmond was in the joint Oxford and Cambridge Universities squad that toured Argentina in 1971.
While he was at Cambridge, England capped Redmond in April 1970 at No.8 in the 35-13 Five Nations Championship defeat by France in front of 34,000 spectators at Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir in Colombes.
Redmond became the Old Cranleighan coach in 1975, and in his first season, the side suffered only one loss, going down 7–6 to Wellington who kicked the winning penalty in the last minute.
He went on to coach Weston-super-Mare before moving to local rivals Hornets.
The Funeral will be at Noon on Thursday, June 26 at Corpus Christi, Ellenborough Park South, Weston-Super-Mare, BS23 1XW
All who knew Gerry are welcome to attend and pay their respects.
No formal dress code is necessary but please would those attending wear a splash of red to celebrate Gerry’s love of Liverpool FC.
