Somerset Rugby Celebrates County Volunteers

Somerset Rugby’s home fixture at Taunton this weekend proved to be a double celebration, as the county took the opportunity to recognise and thank the incredible volunteers who continue to make rugby possible across Somerset.

Held alongside the matchday at Taunton, the Volunteer of the Year Awards brought together volunteers, clubs and supporters from across the county to celebrate the people who give their time, energy and passion to the game.

The awards, supported nationally by Switch, recognise those who go above and beyond within grassroots rugby, from coaches and team managers to grounds teams, committee members and everyone working behind the scenes to keep clubs running week in, week out.

Speaking during the evening, Somerset Rugby thanked all those nominated for the impact they have made within their clubs and communities over the last 12 months and beyond.

This year’s awards featured three categories:

  • Unsung Hero
  • Game for All
  • Keeping Players in the Game

The event also saw Somerset announce the individuals selected to represent the county at the RFU National Volunteer Recognition Awards, which will take place at Allianz Stadium on Friday 4th September.

Somerset’s national finalists are Sarah Greenlee, Graham Thomas and Trevor Debenham from Wellington RFC, recognised for their outstanding work within the “Keeping Players in the Game” category.

Their nomination highlighted the positive impact they have had in retaining and supporting players, while continuing to strengthen participation and community rugby within the club.

Everyone at Somerset Rugby would like to congratulate all nominees and finalists, and extend a huge thank you to every volunteer across the county for everything they do to support the game.
