Somerset U20s Sign Off in Style with Thrilling Draw Against Cornwall

Somerset’s U20 Men’s team closed out their Jason Leonard County Championship campaign in dramatic fashion on Sunday with a thrilling 33-33 draw against Cornwall at Redruth.

In what was a fiercely contested match, Somerset led from the first whistle right up to the final play. The team delivered a performance full of heart, skill, and determination – scoring some sensational tries and standing firm in defence throughout.

The match was a true showcase of county rugby at its best, with Somerset’s young talent rising to the occasion in front of a passionate crowd.

  • Billy Coombes (Oldfield OB RFC)

  • Alfie Hodge (Gordano RFC)

  • George Nuttycombe (Weston-super-Mare RFC)

  • Aiden Cable (Chard RFC)

  • Will Clapham (Bridgwater & Albion RFC)

Conversions:

  • 4 x George Nuttycombe (Weston-super-Mare RFC)

Head Coach Chris Hurd praised the squad’s efforts:
“I am so proud of the players for the performance – it’s a game that will live long in the memory. It was a proper County Championship experience, and Cornwall were fantastic hosts. The players rose to the occasion, and the support that travelled down helped create memories that will stay with us.”

With 13 clubs represented in the matchday 22, the depth and strength of Somerset’s rugby community was clear to see. As some players now age out of the programme, their contributions leave a lasting legacy.

“We spoke about leaving the Somerset shirt in a better place – whether moving on or returning next year – and I truly believe they have done just that,” Hurd added.
“Congratulations and thank you to every player who trained and played across the three games. Your commitment and passion have helped elevate the U20 programme as a platform for county talent.”

A final scoreline that doesn’t quite tell the full story, but one that reflects a game full of character, courage, and pride.

We are Somerset. 👏👏
